GEOPLAT, through its president, takes part in ‘Prospects for cities, neighbourhoods and buildings in 2050’.

On 14 October, the conference ‘Prospects for cities, neighbourhoods and buildings in 2050’ was organised by the Spanish Technological Platform for Energy Efficiency in Madrid – PTE-ee. Iñigo Arrizabalaga, president of GEOPLAT and general manager of TELUR, presented a successful case of the project for cities, neighbourhoods and buildings with an energy balance close to zero: the ATELIER initiative.

This is a European project whose ambition is to contribute to the decarbonisation and development of energy-positive districts in Amsterdam and Bilbao, which will save 1.7 kton of CO2 emissions and thus demonstrate that integrated smart urban solutions support the deployment of the energy potential of geothermal resources.

During the conference he also referred to the Zorrotzaurre reconversion project, promoted by public institutions, which focuses on the decontamination and urbanisation of the island, at the same time as seeking to position it as a test bed for sustainability.

A highlight of the project is the implementation of a heat network based on geothermal energy, which takes advantage of the earth’s internal heat by installing boreholes, geothermal rings and heat pumps, progressively connecting the buildings on Zorrotzaurre.
