Margarita de Gregorio: “Geothermal energy is essential to achieve real energy autonomy in Europe”
In early December, 51 of the 53 members of the European Parliament’s Industry, Energy and Research Committee (ITRE) voted in favour of the Own Initiative Report on geothermal energy, which highlights strategies to accelerate the deployment of geothermal technologies in the European Union.
In this context, Margarita de Gregorio, coordinator of Geoplat, analyzes in an interview for Energía Estratégica the role of geothermal energy in European decarbonization and its situation in Spain. Margarita considers that “Europe has a ambitious goals for the energy transition, so we must not forget the potential of clean, efficient and manageable energies such as geothermal energy”.
The directive explains that geothermal energy has the capacity to play a basic role in achieving real energy autonomy for Europe, so necessary in the current geopolitical scenario. In this sense, she states that “it is time to define strategies and investigate resources and possibilities, the potential of geothermal energy is yet to be exploited”.
About the situation of geothermal development in our country, Margarita said that “if we compare ourselves with the countries around us, Spain needs more impulse, because it has favorable options to increase the use of this renewable energy and attract national and foreign investment”.
Margarita de Gregorio concludes that we need political will and adequate support instruments to promote geothermal energy in Spain.
