TOP 10 countries with the highest installed geothermal power generation capacity in 2023

The total installed geothermal power generation capacity at the end of 2023 was 16,335 MW, an increase of 208 MW, according to the annual TOP published by ThinkGeoEnergy.

🌏 Although geothermal development continues to grow at a still slow pace, it presents a promising horizon thanks to the large numbers expected this year in countries in Asia, Africa and Oceania such as Kenya, Indonesia, the Philippines or New Zealand.

🌎 In North America, development continues and the interest generated by recent geothermal licence sales, development by new start-ups deploying new technologies and the continued momentum of ongoing development will see figures continue to grow gradually.

🌍 In Europe, the emphasis remains on geothermal development for heating purposes and power generation projects are scarce; the main leader, Turkey, sees a rather inactive market given the current market conditions.

These were the 10 leading geothermal countries in 2023:

1. United States – 3,900 MW. 🥇
2. Indonesia – 2,418 MW. 🥈
3. Philippines – 1,952 MW. 🥉
4. Turkey – 1,691 MW.
5. New Zealand – 1,042 MW.
6. Kenya – 985 MW.
7. Mexico – 976 MW.
8. Italy – 916 MW.
9. Iceland – 754 MW.
10. Japan – 576 MW.
