Transforming the energy future through geothermal energy

Margarita de Gregorio, Secretary General of GEOPLAT, analysed the situation of geothermal energy in Spain for Interempresas. “With an increasingly important presence in the energy mix, geothermal energy is emerging as an inexhaustible source of heat from the subsoil, destined to play a fundamental role in decarbonisation for a sustainable energy future“, she said.

With regard to the main milestones that have marked the past year for the sector, she highlighted the public tenders opened by the Consejería de Turismo, Industria y Comercio of the Canary Islands Government for the selection of research programmes for high enthalpy geothermal resources in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma. She also mentioned the aid from the Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía (IDAE) to carry out feasibility studies for innovative projects for the use of deep geothermal energy, with an investment of 117 million euros (from the European Union, through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan).

At European level, she mentioned the importance of the unanimous adoption by the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) of a report by Krasnodebski of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR), to develop the potential of geothermal energy in the European Union.

Margarita de Gregorio concludes that “from GEOPLAT we are committed to the development of this energy source, we will collaborate through initiatives of value for the sector and with the dissemination of information to increase its knowledge, as our purpose is to contribute to reveal it and promote its position as a jewel for a more sustainable energy future.
